My wife Toni and I left for a last minute trip to DI this past Thursday to celebrate our 15th anniversary and of course for me to do a little fishing. I married well. We settled into a Fish Camp unit about 10pm Thurs evening and I was up at 3:30a again heading south but this time largely on foot. My wife got up and drove me to the beach. ( See married well above) Thanks to Pier#r, I had an idea that the fish were biting at the end of Sand Island and I wanted to be there at first light. I was pulling a Pierless Traveler and boy it is a long walk. I knew I wanted to get to the south end but was otherwise blind as to where fish. The wind had me looking at the inside though. As it got light , I saw a fisherman on a mud flat so I went about 150yards down from him and tried the same thing with a top water plug. Nothing!! I headed further south and towards the end on the inside there was a slight indentation to the shore and the water was a little flatter. I waded out, which is hard for me to do as I always feel like I am trading my spot on the food chain, and began to cast a plug. It was 5:30 something and fish started to rise around me. I threw three different plugs and only got one short strike. I finally switched to a popping cork and a pearl colored DOA and caught a nice trout the first cast. For about an hour I was into the fish. I was getting a fish or multiple strikes on each cast, and as far as numbers go it was the best day of speckled tout fishing I have ever enjoyed. I caught somewhere above twenty and kept a limit. The biggest was 19" but most were in the 15-16" range. Nothing real special except maybe for a guy from TN.

Here are the trout. Sorry I just have cell phone pics

Toni took this pic of me when I got back to the public beach. I had just been waved at and smiled at by two pretty girls in bikinis. I am sure they thought they were being nice to a guy on furlough from his group home. Oh well.

Toni picked me up and we later got to meet Hawk. It was nice of him to go out of his way to stop and say hello. I appreciate it.

I also got to to talk to Live Bait on the phone. I hate we didn't get to fish together.

Here is a pick of our supper from Skinners

Saturday Toni made the walk and we both went fishing. I went back to the same spot and we caught a limit between us. The bite was not as fierce but we should have had more trout than we did. I guess you can always say that.

Here is the second days catch. Sorry for the poor quality

After another fine meal Sat night I again made the walk down Pelican Island Sun am. To my dismay, campers had parked a boat right on the X. I went over to the gulf side and caught one nice trout and the largest ground mullet of my life. That was it. My luck and my trip were played out, but I had been blessed by both.

Image

On the way out we found this girl on the side of DI Parkway. She wasn't walking well and we helped her as best we could. She seemed happy for a lift to the water. A Ruddy I guess.

It was a great trip and we met some nice people as always. When down there, I always think of Bandit some. I know he could be a grumpy SOB at times, but the last time I saw him, he drove all the way down to DI to let me borrow his Spanish rig because he didn't think mine was just right. He didnt feel like fishing at that point but let me use the outfit for an entire week. He said, "Just leave it in the pay shack when you go home", and I never saw him again. Nobody is perfect but I will take a chance on a guy like that.

HD...sorry for not introducing myself!! We fished near each other for a while on friday morning and I even stopped to talk to you on my way out. I was fishing at the very end throwing topwaters and mirrolures. Tall guy, white cap, single rod and small tackle box.

Nice meeting you even though I didn't know it was you!!

I remember you well S&T. You were the guy on the mudflat and later had to leave for work. That's dedication there.

And its dang good to hear from Chert. One of the very best fishermen I know.
